Previously we posted about our Game of Thrones walking tour of Dubrovnik, now it is time to post about our Game of Thrones walking tour of Split. We were fortunate enough to be able to do both of these walks, and as I said in the previous blog, it covers more than just scenes in the movie, but also some history. Click here for the tours.
Game of Thrones walking tour of Split or Dubrovnik?
Now if I had to choose, I would say I preferred the Game of Thrones walking tour of Split. Dubrovnik was prettier, but Split had a little more to offer somehow. Or maybe it was because there was a lot more of Khaleesi involved, as well as where she keeps her dragons. It was so amazing to see this, as well as the reason as to why this room exists in the history of Split.
When you start your Game of Thrones walking tour of Split you first meet up with your guide, hop in a shuttle and speed out of the city to a castle you didn’t see. This castle is made out of the rock it is situated on and so difficult to see. From here we had a magnificent view of Split and the surrounding area. We were even told about the water duct system on our way to the castle. Interesting stuff. Also, being driven somewhere was nice as it was quite a walk from our Hostel, 101 Dalmatian.
After the Castle comes the…
After you spend a while at the castle and get told a few times to remember something which will be referred to later on, you drive back down. As you continue your Game of Thrones walking tour of Split you actually get to walk around the room where the dragons are kept. I won’t say any more of that and give any spoilers. I will say that it is a great spot for photos. As with Dubrovnik, on this walking tour you get something included. You can go back to this location anytime during the day again for free. I love free added things.
Both the Game of Thrones walking tour of Split and Dubrovnik last about 3 hours. It is a full 3 hours filled with flip charts of photos and comparison from the stills. This time no one reenacted any scenes, and we only had one other couple with us. In regards to stairs, there were limited stairs in this Game of Thrones walking tour of Split in comparison to Dubrovnik.
The tour is started and ended at the same place; by the harbour. If you are a shopper then it would be great to take some time after the Game of Thrones walking tour of Split and do some shopping. There is even a local chocolate shop. We got to taste some as part of the tour too.
Elite Travel are one of only a handful of tours that run all through the winter months, and not only the hustle and bustle of summer when the streets are flooding with tourists. Our tour guide even told us that Split has been a destination of a few famous people. So who knows, maybe you walk into someone, not only from Game of Thrones.
After the Game of Thrones walking tour of Split, Niklas and I decided that we wanted to keep walking, find the top of the mountain and watch the sunset. This was when we met Sid. Well, only after Niklas and I walked a whole 45 mins out of the way because google maps let us down. When we finally found the way to the top a man overtook us very quickly, only to top at the top, out of breath and excuse himself for his rushing nature. He offered to take a photo of us, that is how the conversation started.
We casually walked higher and higher up the mountain together learning about the Indian culture in Split. It was insightful, and he was doing an amazing 15-day tour of Europe with his time off. Sid only stayed a day in Split and had his itinerary down to a second. What type of planner are you? Do you work out your travels down to every last detail, or are you more Lucy goosey?
Up on the Mountain.
The view over split from the top of the mountain is absolutely beautiful. The way up is also not as far out of the city as google maps would have you think. Instead, it is just right to the harbour if you are looking out to the sea. Halfway up is a bar where you can stop for a drink and watch the sunset. This sunset was one of my most beautiful sunsets yet. To be honest, most sunsets are. The city changed colour and the romantic atmosphere became palpable. It was such as a good way to end the Game of Thrones walking tour of Split. Plus we went to the Sexy Cow for dinner. Make sure to go there if you are ever in Split. The service and the food was amazing!
