Game of Thrones Walking Tour of Dubrovnik

Prior to our trip to Croatia we decided on a few day trips, one being a Game of Thrones walking tour of Dubrovnik. Now, Niklas has been a Game of Throns fan since day one. Me on the other hand, I never really watched it. More like I watched one episode back at uni and fell asleep during it. Some of you may be gasping, but don’t worry, since then I have met Niklas. Together we watched all episodes of all the seasons and absolutely loved it. Also, I had to get on the same page as Niklas so that I could understand the walking tour.

The Sunrise before Game of Thrones walking tour of Dubrovnik

On the day of our tour Niklas and I first wanted to catch Dubrovnik with empty streets and golden lighting. So we woke up early and made our way to the old town in Dubrovnik. The streets were so beautiful and the sun hit the buildings just right to make you feel like you are walking around in a fairy tale. Niklas also managed to capture the morning beauty of Dubrovnik in this time. All the shops were closed. The only other people around were 2 other photographers and the delivery men dropping off the day’s goods to the restaurants.

We had a few hours to kill after sunrise and before our Game of Thrones walking tour of Dubrovnik which would start at 10:15 with Elite Travel. So we headed back home for a coffee before our day would really kick off. A much needed coffee at that. It was quite something to see as the day changed from quiet, golden and majestic, to a more busy, crowded and touristy place. I much prefer it when the shops are closed and you have room to breathe, don’t you agree?

Let’s talk about the tour.

It was really cool to walk around Dubrovnik and the old town seeing where shots were filmed. How these shots were manipulated and changed so that you think one place is actually two different places. How two different places are actually the same place. Game of Thrones uses a lot of CGI but it also leaves a lot of the natural architecture in place. Rightfully so as Old Town Dubrovnik really does look spectacular. It is such a great place for sightseeing.

When the tour starts you are offered the chance to fill your water bottles at the fountain. All running water is drinkable in Dubrovnik, or you could pop into a shop to buy some water. This was great as there were so many stairs to climb and paths to walk. Our Game of Thrones walking tour of Dubrovnik started with stairs straight away. I won’t go into too much detail of which scene of which episode we saw everything off but I will let the photographs speak for themselves.

While on the Game of Thrones walking Tour, you don’t just get to find out which celeb walked where but also some of the history of Dubrovnik. As someone with a History degree, I loved this. I loved finding out why a building was destroyed or where this and that took place. The tour wasn’t overwhelmingly historic though, quite a good mix of Game of Thrones and History.

Walk it like a local

A wonderful part of the tour was seeing places that Niklas and I otherwise would not have seen. Not only being guided by a local, but also having the city walls included in the Game of Thrones walking tour was an added bonus. We did this on a later day, and the ticket is valid for a year so you can go back anytime and use it, but only once. If nothing else, the Game of Thrones walking tour of Dubrovnik is worth it for the city walls. So I would say the tour is worth it.

That awkward moment

Now, I can imagine that every single walking tour is different. There are always different people, and a different guide plays a role too. In our particular group we had a few Americans. Two of these Americans – a couple-  stood out to us, not because of the conversations we had with them, but instead of the painfully awkward encounter. If you are a Game of Thrones fan you will know about the “Shame” scene where Cersei has to walk naked through the streets to rectify her sins. Well, we were taken to the start of this walk, to the top of these stairs. Once there we had time to take pictures and “reenact the scene.” These two Americans took this suggestion way too far. Or at least just the guy.

He asked his girlfriend to stand in front of him while he takes a picture of her. That was fine but what happened next was mortifying. To her surprise as well as everyone else’s, he brought a bell all the way to Croatia from America with him, just for this moment. Talk about being extra. He then rang the bell and shouted “SHAME” at his girlfriend. At least he made a lasting memory in everyone’s minds. I surely won’t forget how embarrassed she was and how painful it was to watch.

All in a days work

Awkwardness aside, the tour came to an end and we were more clued up about Game of Thrones. We knew more about this history of Dubrovnik, as well as there having been a war! After our Game of Thrones walking tour of Dubrovnik we still had a whole day ahead of us. We asked our guide where the best pizza was, and it was good pizza, then we even ended the day by hiking Srd. We have already blogged about that, so have a read here.
