If you have ever been to Croatia, or seen Game of Thrones you should surely know about Dubrovnik. I mean, it is a hot spot for tourists and cruise ships. Surrounding the Old Town you will find the city walls of Dubrovnik dating back to the 16th century. In my opinion they are pretty well kept. I mean, I have a few things from 23 years ago in a worse state then these city walls of Dubrovnik. Now obviously, some parts have been reconstructed, especially due to the war in the early 90s. Overall, the wall is still there and accessible to the public.
As high as the walls are, so are the price to walk along them. The Dubrovnik city wall cost is 150 Kuna or about 20€. However, being who we are, we got to do it for free. Actually, we took part in a Game of Thrones walking tour and the city walls was included in that, click here to see that tour from Elite Travel. There are many Dubrovnik walking tours to chose from which you could do too. Anyway, walking the city walls of Dubrovnik is so worth it, and something Niklas and I wanted to do while in Dubrovnik. After our road trip from Split to Dubrovnik we were thinking “what to do in Dubrovnik” then bam, we saw the walls. True story. Read about our road trip here.
During the day there are hundreds of people circulating this one way walking system. I mean, this is definitely one of the Dubrovnik points of interest. There are a few places along the wall where you can grab a bite to eat, and juice up before continuing on your way around the city walls of Dubrovnik. These places even have a pretty epic view of the ocean, the Adriatic Sea to be exact.
Walking the City Walls of Dubrovnik?
Well, there is one entrance and 3 exists on the city walls of Dubrovnik. Anytime between 8am and 6pm you can keep circulating around the walls. It takes about an hour to walk the whole way around, but with a camera you can obviously expect to take longer. No matter what time of day you go, there will be people. It is also sad that you can’t be up there for the golden hour and sunset. This would have been epic for lighting and landscape photos.
To our surprise, after about half of the wall walked, there was a man in a booth. He popped out and asked to see out tickets. “But why?! We already scanned them” was my sassy reply when he adamantly asked to see our tickets. Luckily we still had our tickets, but I mean, I can imagine some people get rid of unwanted paper. The moral of the story, keep your wall tickets!
We went up at 4.30pm and only left the walls just after 6pm. Niklas needed to revisit a view to get the best picture he could, with as little people as possible. So we walked past the last exist and quickly snapped the last few photographs for our monies worth, I mean it isn’t every day you get to walk the city walls of Dubrovnik.
Why walk the wall?
Other than it being exciting and one of the things to do in Dubrovnik, it is also a great way to get in a new perspective of the old town. You get to see stunning scenery, and look into people’s backyards. If you time it right, you can see a basketball game behind one of the schools. Yes, there is a school in the Old Town. Cool right?!
If you are a Game of Thrones fan, then it would also be pretty cool to see where Tyrion and Vayrs talk while in King’s Landing. You aren’t allowed to go to that exact place on the city walls of Dubrovnik, but you can get pretty close, which is cool.
Walking around the wall also gives you a view over Dubrovnik giving you an idea of what to see in Dubrovnik.
Things to remember.
Take your water with you! Even though there are places where you can sit down and buy a drink, Dubrovnik is expensive, and not travel budget friendly. If you want to fork out, then it could be lovely having a drink on the city walls of Dubrovnik.
Comfortable shoes. There are a few stairs you will need to climb, as well as having to walk a lot. So comfort over fashion.
Have patience. There are a lot of people on the wall, so if you are a photographer, you will need patience. I mean, all photographers already know that. But key to the patience is being ready to shoot as soon as there is a gap. Also, take as many photos as you can. You can always delete them afterwards. After all, this is a top thing to do in Dubrovnik, and worth the wait.
There you have it.
If you are thinking about places to visit in Dubrovnik the city walls should be on your list. It is a great for sightseeing in Dubrovnik. Even if you do not want to pay to walk on the walls there are other walking tours in Dubrovnik which are free, and you can walk around in the old town looking up at the city walls of Dubrovnik, and wonder how the other people got up there in the first place. Also, all the walking tires you out making you have a great night sleep. If you are looking for accommodation then give THE VIEW a try.
